It not only informs and inspires action for learners of all ages but has the capacity to transform lives and society itself. Environmental Education is a key tool in supporting environmental stewardship, creating healthier and civically-engaged communities, and promoting a sustainable future for all, driven by the inseparable aspirations of ecological & social responsibility and justice. Not only does the environment inherently sustain all life on earth, our personal and cultural identities are often tied to the landscapes around us as well. Environmental Education honors all the elements of the human-nature relationship, from today’s groundbreaking scientific concepts to traditional epistemologies where modern languages fail to articulate our deep connections to the earth. Environmental Education at Prescott College also promotes Best Practices in the field, recognizing the myriad of benefits when pedagogy is experiential, student-centered, and place-based in the surrounding human and biological communities. 

The graduate Department of Education offers students the opportunity to pursue a Master of Arts in Education with an emphasis Environmental Education, a certificate in Environmental Education, or an accelerated Master of Arts in Education with an emphasis in Environmental Education (4+1). Emphasis in all programs will be placed upon the nurturing of highly qualified, innovative, critically thinking, "thought" leaders within the field of EE. 

The M.A. ED. in Environmental Education (MAEEE) program has policies, methods, and teaching practices that comply with NAAEE (North American Association for Environmental Education) higher education accreditation requirements and Prescott College is in the process of seeking accreditation with NAAEE.  

Prescott College offers an Accelerated Master's degree with the following stipulations: 

  • Students may apply for the MAEEE program in their junior year and take courses in their senior year. 
  • Undergraduate courses do not count towards the accelerated program. Only graduate courses count towards the graduate program. For example, an undergraduate course in foundational theories of environmental education may not be applied to the graduate program, however, the graduate course “Foundations of Environmental Education” may be applied to the undergraduate degree. 
  • Students continue to pay undergraduate tuition for senior year, even though they are taking graduate courses. 
  • The senior is only allowed to take foundational environmental education courses as credit towards the graduate program. Foundational courses in ecological studies are also required as prerequisite to the program in order for the Accelerated Master’s degree candidate to have a solid foundation in environmental literacy. 
  • The following MAEEE courses are available for students in the accelerated program: 
    • 3 credits – Connected learning 
    • 3 credits – GSRM 
    • 3 credits – Foundations of Environmental Education 
    • 3 credits - Elective 
  • Orientation to the program is a prerequisite to the program. Once accepted into the Accelerated program, students will be expected to comply with all other requirements of first semester students including: 
  • Attending the Orientation to the MAEEE program during the general Orientation for all new students conducted each August or January
  • Attending and participating in the Colloquia in November and/ or April of their senior year. Despite doing graduate work in their senior year, students are not considered to be a graduate student until they have earned a bachelor degree and have applied to the Graduate Degree Program. However, they will be considered a member of the MAEEE Cohort as they begin the program in their senior year.
